Westonia also won both the Water Conservation and General Appearance categories of the 2010 Tidy Towns competition for the Central Wheatbelt area.

The Shire of Westonia extends its congratulations firstly to community members and residents who presented their own residences proudly and who keep the town looking first class and secondly its employees who make significant contributions toward making the town what it is.

Tidy TownsUnder the water conservation category the judges noted the plan to utilise Catalpa Resources’ wastewater treatment facility for the town’s ovals and various other town gardens and the linking of the lifestyle village to this plant. The judges commented that recognising and investing in opportunities such as this is vital in water-poor areas.

Under the General Appearance category the judges stated, “One thing that stood out was how neat private gardens were – regardless of age and ground conditions, residents have found practical ways to make them look presentable in a low-water environment. Congratulations are due to Westonia residents!” The judges also noted the construction of the Lifestyle Village that will facilitate the future sustainability of the town, the development of the Club Hotel museum and the Poppet Head feature / main street landscaping and garden beds. They also were impressed by the significant upgrades that have been made in partnership with Catalpa Resources at the Caravan Park / Mine Camp, including grassed areas and water wise gardens, commenting that is “not your typical mine camp anymore”.

Westonia will now attend the State Tidy Towns Awards function which will be held at the Royal Perth Yacht Club in Perth on Friday the 19th November.
