A new country bowling club has been formed in the township of Westonia, a small Wheatbelt town located 330km east of Perth. The team known as the ‘Wessy Wanderers’ have registered a ‘B’ Grade men’s pennants side in the South Eastern League and have to date already won a couple of games in the competition. This is quite a feat as the side consists mainly of first year bowlers, with only four players having had previous experience. Several ladies also compete for other sides within the league and it is anticipated that a Ladies side will eventually represent Westonia in the league.

A very successful six week ‘Corporate Competition’ has already been played pre-harvest, with 14 teams participating. This competition will continue for another six week period after the holidays. This competition has been registered under the Bowls WA ‘Getting on the Green’ program. The Clubs inaugural open day was held on Sunday 7th December with 64 bowlers attending from the surrounding district. An hour on/off format was played with the inaugural winning team being from Shackleton.

A new 4 rink synthetic grass green was constructed with the assistance of the Shire of Westonia, Department of Sport & Recreation and Westonia Progress Association. The rink is collocated in the townships recreational precinct which also accommodates the local swimming pool, 4 x synthetic tennis courts and playground facilities. A new ‘Stadium’ was also constructed for the dual use of the Bowls & Tennis clubs. Its design is quite unique with its outdoor alfresco theme well suited to bowlers who can spectate games taking place on the green.

The synthetic surface was the first to be installed in WA and is the very latest in waterless bowls surfaces known as Dry Max Pro. Green speeds are averaging 13.5 seconds at the moment and with gentle rolling the club hopes to eventually have them running at a steady 15 seconds.

The facility was officially opened by Hon. Brendon Grylls MLA, Minister for Regional Development on Saturday 20th December 2008.
