Council Controlled Standpipes

Council resolved at its July meeting to install two (2) solar powered standpipe controllers with the purpose of achieving better cost recovery for water taken from a Council provided facilities and reduce the misuse of water by outside users. The problem with the standpipe usage within the Shire at present, is the misuse of water by outside users such as contractors and non-residents.

The 2017 Local Government Week was held during August 2-4, which the CEO and 4 of our Elected Members attended. As part of the event the WALGA holds it’s AGM which includes the presentation of awards to nominated past and present Elected Members in a variety of categories including Long and Loyal Service, Merit Award and Eminent Service. This year the Shire successfully nominated Councillor and former President, Louis Geier for the Eminent Service Award.

A banner depicting a grinning shark taking a selfie has taken out top prize in the 2017 Banners in the Terrace Competition. 59 communities entered banners in the competition run by the WA Local Government Association as part of its annual Convention at the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre.

Eastern Wheatbelt Biosecurity Group has been assisting Wheatbelt sheep farmers manage wild dog populations and reducing stock losses for over 10 years. Kulin farmer and founder of EWBG, Jim Sullivan, reports that with the control of wild dog populations stock losses have declined from over 1000 in 2008 down to 50 last year. Additionally, the group has noticed that with the removal of wild dogs (as well as cats and foxes) native fauna such as kangaroos, native marsupials and birds have returned to areas

The Shire of Westonia, together with the Shire of Bruce Rock, Shire of Kellerberrin, Shire of Yilgarn and Shire of Merredin are collaboratively developing an app that will provide residents and visitors with information on businesses, services, events and specials within these shires. The app will be free to download and will be available for both iOS and Android devices.

In late 2014, the Shire of Westonia was awarded funding through the State NRM Office to commission a Conservation Management Plan (CMP). The Shire accepted an offer from Eco Logical Australia to produce the CMP. The draft Plan was submitted to the Shire for discussion in April.

Hood-Penn Museum

The Hood-Penn Museum on Westonia's main street is now open. Entry is $3 for adults and $1 for anyone under the age of 18. The museum includes a variety of scenes showcasing early life in the shire including a pub scene, a shop/hardware store scene, a petrol station/garage scene, a kitchen scene, a bedroom scene and a blacksmith/farm workshop scene. A vibrating mine tunnel is also included within the museum that simulates life in an early Westonian gold mine.

I hereby provide notice that I, Dylan Copeland, authorised by and on behalf of the Shire of Westonia intend to lay 1080 poison baits in the Westonia Common for the control of foxes and rabbits. I intend to commence baiting on Monday, 16 March 2015 and complete the baiting program on Tuesday, 21 April 2015. Please be advised that 1080 is highly toxic.
