Local government ordinary elections are held on the third Saturday in October every two years.'image description'

 The next local government ordinary election will be held on 21 October 2017 with Councillors elected for a four year term. There will be three Councillor positions becoming vacant, being Councillors Jefferys, Huxtable and Geier.

There will also be an Extraordinary Election for Cr Hermon who is standing down, this term will be a (2) two year term.

If the number of candidates is equal to the number of vacancies, the candidate is elected unopposed. If there are more candidates than vacancies, the election will proceed.

 Westonia will be conducting an “In-Person” vote.

 Enrolling to Vote

Enrolments for the electoral roll for the 2017 Local Government Ordinary Election close on Friday 1 September 2017 at 5:00pm. While voting in a local government elections is not compulsory in Western Australia, all electors are strongly encouraged to vote.


If you are already enrolled as an elector on the State Electoral Roll for your residential address, you will automatically be enrolled for Local Government Elections.

 If you are a resident of the Shire and not already enrolled, you must make a claim for enrolment with the Australian Electoral Commission. To enrol please visit the Australian Electoral Commission website. Enrolment forms are also available from the Post Office or Shire Administration and need to be posted (Reply Paid) to the Electoral Commission.

 Non-Resident Owners and Occupiers

You may be eligible to be enrolled to vote as a non-resident owner or occupier where the property you own or occupy is located in the Shire of Westonia, provided you meet the following criteria:

You are enrolled as an elector on the State or Commonwealth electoral roll for a residence outside the district

You own or occupy property within the district

You complete an Enrolment Eligibility Claim Form and have it accepted by the Shire for future elections. Forms are available on the Westonia Shire Website: www.westonia.wa.gov.au

 Joint Owners and Occupiers

Where rateable property is owned or occupied by more than two people, a majority of the owners and occupiers may nominate two persons from amongst themselves who are enrolled on either the State or Commonwealth electoral rolls, to be enrolled as owner/occupier electors. An Application to Register a Nominee for Co-owners or Co-occupiers form will need to be completed.


A body corporate, which owns or occupies rateable property, may nominate two persons provided they are enrolled on either the State or Commonwealth electoral rolls. An Application to Register for a Body Corporate form will need to be completed by the body corporate.

 Councillors represent the interests of the ratepayers and residents of the district and provide leadership and guidance to the community. They facilitate communication between the community and Shire, and participate in the Shire’s decision making process.

 Electors who wish to nominate as a candidate in the election must complete a valid nomination application and present it to the Returning Officer before nominations close. Nominations for the election open 44 days before polling day and close at 4.00pm, 37 days before polling day.
