Eastern Wheatbelt Biosecurity Group Declared Pest Rate Introduced

Eastern Wheatbelt Biosecurity Group has been assisting Wheatbelt sheep farmers manage wild dog populations and reducing stock losses for over 10 years. Kulin farmer and founder of EWBG, Jim Sullivan, reports that with the control of wild dog populations stock losses have declined from over 1000 in 2008 down to 50 last year. Additionally, the group has noticed that with the removal of wild dogs (as well as cats and foxes) native fauna such as kangaroos, native marsupials and birds have returned to areas.
Previously, the EWBG wild dog control program was funded by 50:50 contributions from the State Government and local Shires. The Biosecurity and Agriculture Management Act 2007 (BAM Act) allows a rate to be raised for the purposes of controlling declared pests in prescribed areas. This rate is known as the Declared Pest Rate (DPR). The DPR has been collected in the pastoral lease areas since the late 1970's.
In conjunction with newly formed biosecurity groups, in 2016/17 this rate is being applied in 11 shires in the Eastern Wheatbelt. From September 2016 a rate on landholdings of 20ha and above will be introduced to assist the funding of the wild dog control program with equal contributions from the State Government.
The rate notices will be mailed to landholders/ratepayers beginning mid-September 2016 by the Office of State Revenue, who are responsible for collecting the rate. This is a compulsory levy and will be administered by the Government and not the Shire.
