Westonia has claimed the title of Central Wheatbelt Regional Winner for the 2009 Tidy Towns - Sustainable Communities Awards at the regional ceremony held in Trayning today. Keep Australia Beautiful WA Tidy Towns' State Program Manager Gail Dodd said the judges had been particularly impressed with what had been achieved by a town with a population of only 250 people.

The Wheatbelt East Regional Organisation of Councils in conjunction with the North Eastern Wheatbelt Regional Organisation of Councils and the South East Avon Voluntary Regional Organisation of Councils have been successful in their Federal Government, Caring For Our Country grant submission and will receive $786,000 over the next four years.

A new country bowling club has been formed in the township of Westonia, a small Wheatbelt town located 330km east of Perth. The team known as the ‘Wessy Wanderers’ have registered a ‘B’ Grade men’s pennants side in the South Eastern League and have to date already won a couple of games in the competition. This is quite a feat as the side consists mainly of first year bowlers, with only four players having had previous experience. Several ladies also compete for other sides within the league and it is anticipated that a Ladies side will eventually represent Westonia in the league.

The Shire of Westonia recently held a function during Local Government Week in Perth taking the opportunity to award John Della Bosca an Honorary Freemanship of the shire.
